Watershed Restoration Crew
Since 1999, the City of Kelowna Environment Division has hired 6-12 summer students for their Watershed Restoration Crew. Each May the crew returns to the creeks, eager to help with local restoration and enhancement initiatives.
The Watershed Restoration Crew works on a variety of projects, including:
- Combating invasive weeds in riparian areas such as knapweed, burdock, Canada thistle, bull thistle, yellow iris and purple loosestrife.
- Replanting native vegetation species along creek corridors
- Assisting with the Post Fire Rehabilitation Project in areas burned by the 2003 Okanagan Mountain fire
- Enhancing instream and streambank habitat in local streams, improving creek health and kokanee spawning habitat
- Promoting a sense of environmental stewardship in our community
- Maintaining past restoration and enhancement sites
Watch for these enthusiastic individuals each summer, decked out in their distinctive “Clean Streams Start Here!” t-shirts.
