2011 Poster contest asks for car free vision

This year’s theme for the 2011 Central Okanagan Clean Air Day poster contest is “My Street, Car Free.” Students, kindergarten through Grade 12, are encouraged to participate in Clean Air Day 2011 by submitting a poster.

“Vehicles are responsible for most of the air pollution in Kelowna and the Central Okanagan,” says Kate Bergen, Regional Air Quality Program Coordinator. “We encourage students to imagine what their neighbourhood would look like with fewer cars and how this can help our environment. Walking, biking and other forms of active transportation are great ways to reduce pollution and help us all breathe a little easier. Entries should promote alternative transportation or other ideas for reducing the number of cars on the street.”

Posters must be submitted to the attention of Kate Bergen, Kelowna City Hall, 1435 Water Street, V1Y 1J4, no later than April 1.

The poster contest winner will have an opportunity to meet Kelowna Mayor Sharon Shepherd and receive a new bicycle courtesy of Kelowna Cycle. The winning poster will be professionally printed and displayed throughout the community to promote Clean Air Day on Wednesday June 8, and on September 25 to promote Car Free Day.

Clean Air Day is an annual national event held during Environment Week in June to increase public awareness and action on clean air and climate change.
