School Liaison Officer

In 2003, The Kelowna RCMP and School District 23 created two school liaison positions with the goal of increasing positive youth interaction and the promotion of safe schools and safe communities. Both officers are active participants on the School District 23 Safe Schools Committee and are also representatives on various other committees.

The School Liaison Officer interacts with the students in courses such as law, career planning, shop and home economics, which helps them build relationships with the students. They also participate in Career Programs as well as the selection of candidates for the RCMP Academy in Vernon.

School Liaison Officers instruct the D.A.R.E. program at the elementary level and maintain the School Drug Free Program.

Additionally, they act as resource people for the teachers, parents and youth and are positive role models for our youth. Although their roles are not intended to be as enforcement officers, they will respond as police officers to any emergent in progress incident.
