Media Relations Officer (MRO)
This individual is responsible for providing accurate and timely information to the public through the media. The current Media Relations Officer for Kelowna Detachment of the RCMP is Cst. Steve Holmes.
There is no such thing as a typical day as everything depends on the incidents that are reported. The MRO is responsible for researching the file or incident and then preparing a press release. Depending on the nature of the file, the MRO may hold a press conference or simply deal with reporters on an individual basis.
When interacting with the media, the MRO must balance the media’s curiosity with maintaining the integrity of the investigation. This can be frustrating as information often isn’t shared in order to protect someone’s privacy.
The MRO must be up to date on policy and procedure in addition to any changes to Acts such as the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
The MRO is the “Face of the Detachment” and is often called upon to attend events such as Citizenship, Court, and Opening Ceremonies in Red Serge.
