West Nile Virus Prevention – Catch Basin Mosquito Control Program
The City of Kelowna is working in partnership with the Regional District of Central Okanagan and Interior Health Authority to help minimize the risk of contracting West Nile virus.
Since 2004, the Central Okanagan Regional District, in conjunction with the City of Kelowna, has been proactive in implementing a Catch Basin Mosquito Control Program for West Nile virus prevention. Approximately 8,000 catch basins are part of this program.
The stagnant water that accumulates in catch basins provides an ideal breeding habitat for mosquito species that are potential vectors for West Nile virus, such as Culex pipiens.
