Larviciding
Provided larvae are present, the Catch Basin Mosquito Control Crew treats approximately 8,000 catch basins with a combination of lowest impact mosquito selective larvicides. VectoLex is being used in 2008.
It is recommended that treatments occur every 25-30 days throughout the mosquito breeding season once larvae have been detected. Larviciding typically begins mid-June and continues until late August/early September, depending on larval presence.
Pre-emptive larviciding is a proactive step in reducing populations of potential West Nile virus vector mosquito species in residential areas. Culex pipiens are prevalent in the stagnant water found in catch basins.
