Most Environmentally Friendly Yard
2009 Winner: Gwen Steele
Gwen Steele is a renowned local expert in sustainable gardening. Focusing specifically on xeriscaping, Gwen has been teaching these techniques for many years. Xeriscaping is a type of gardening which works in harmony with the dry landscape of Kelowna. It benefits our environment by conserving water, by eliminating the need for synthetic chemicals such as fertilizers and pesticides, and by enhancing habitat for beneficial insects and birds.
Gwen’s yard also operates as a lab and classroom to teach people who want to gain a better knowledge of xeriscaping. Gwen’s garden goes beyond sharing knowledge. It also creates community as neighbours stop to chat and share gardening ideas. She often states that she believes “we create community one front garden at a time.”
