Most Environmentally Dedicated Individual
2009 Winner: Sharon Affeld and Michelle Hamilton
Sharon Affeld
Sharon Affeld is a teacher at Raymer Elementary. She has been working on making Raymer Elementary a more environmentally friendly school for 16 years. She has developed a school compost program, encourages waste free lunches and recycling among the students.
Recently Sharon Affeld worked on making the playground more beautiful by planting trees, flowers, shrubs and hanging baskets. As a result the garden was dedicated the Best Children’s Garden in 2007 by the Communities in Bloom Organization. Sharon also organizes a garage sale every year so that things are reused, rather than discarded.
Michelle Hamilton
Michelle Hamilton is a Science and Environmental Education teacher at KLO Middle School. Michelle has incorporated environmental education into many aspects of the BC curriculum through hands on experience. This includes activities such as regular nature field trips, taking part in North American bird counts, and participating in environmental campaigns to develop her students' awareness. She has also been instrumental in making KLO a greener school by creating a course in environmental education, introducing a composting program, involving her students in adopting a portion of Fascieux Creek and taking part in the annual Environmental Mind Grind. This year with the help of the KLO Green Committee, Michelle hopes to achieve Jade Status for her school. She is also working on planting native trees on the school ground and to start a school garden.
