Gerstmar Park
In a joint project involving the Regional District of the Central Okanagan and the City of Kelowna, Gerstmar Park has been developed at the end of Gerstmar Road bordering the Mission Creek Greenway.
Amenities for this community level park include pathways, a playground, site furnishings, an open turf area, native tree and riparian area enhancements, a parking lot, restroom facilities and a tennis court. The design of this park is based on sustainability principles; in addition to traditional lawn and trees, this park will have a naturalized landscape that provides habitat value, reduces maintenance effort and conserves water.
Project Schedule - completed
Construction: July to October 2010
Cost: $960,000
Background
Outland Design Landscape Architecture was contracted in 2008 to develop a Conceptual Park Plan
for the property located at the end of Gerstmar Road near Mission Creek.
The conceptual plan was developed to aid the City and Regional District with budgetary planning so that the park could be developed in the future, as funds become available.
In 2008, Outland Design held two open public consultation meetings at the EECO (Environmental Education Centre for the Okanagan) in Mission Creek Regional Park, completed a mail out questionnaire to residents in the area and met with stakeholder groups in the area.
The final plan presents an overview for the site including:
- open space
- natural parkland
- turf areas
- children's playground
- washroom facility
- public parking
