Pesticide Labels
How to read your labelRead the GUARANTEE on your label! Refer to the how to read your pesticide label fact sheet.
The GUARANTEE states the common name of the active ingredient(s) in the product. The active ingredient is the part of the pesticide product that controls the pest.
Commonly Used PesticidesCommonly used pesticides NOT allowed under the bylaw:
- 2,4-D herbicide in weed and feed type products
- Diacamba herbicide used in weed control products
- Mecoprop (MCPP) herbicide used in weed control products
- Glyphosate herbicide non-selective
- Malathion insecticide
- Carbaryl insecticide and plant growth regulator
Allowable Active IngredientsThe bylaw will allow pesticides with the following active ingredients from the Excluded Pesticide list to be used for cosmetic, non-essential purposes;
- Acetic acid
- Biological pesticides like Bt (Bacillus thuringiensis), nematodes and other biologicalcontrol agents
- Borax
- Corn gluten meal
- Fatty acids
- Ferric or ferrous phosphates
- Soap
- Mineral oil (dormant or horticultural oil)
- Pyrethrum or pyrethrins
- Silicon dioxide ( diatomaceous earth)
- Sulphur (lime sulphur and other sulphur compounds)
Note: If the active ingredient in the GUARANTEE is not on the Excluded Pesticide list then it is NOT allowed and can not be used by the homeowner. These pesticides can only be applied by a certified applicator.
