Healthy Yard Tips
Download our detailed fact sheets (or check out our Pesticide Free videos on YouTube ), which contain tips to maintain a healthy, natural outdoor space:

The best remedy against weeds is to grow a dense and healthy lawn. Weeds grow best under specific conditions. They prefer dry, compacted soils with low fertility. Improving the turf and soil conditions creates an inhospitable environment for weeds, which will become weaker and less competitive.

Weeds are plants growing where they are not wanted. Knowledge of their growth pattern is important to select the best method of control.

Aphids are part of nature. They can also be a nuisance. Most plants (but not all) are susceptible to aphid infestations. They are found on many flowers and ornamentals including roses, but also on fruit trees and vegetable plants.

Different insects and small animals live in our gardens. Most cause no harm or are beneficial and are best ignored, such as many spiders and ants. Others may cause problems. For example, slugs and snails can go unnoticed until there is extensive leaf damage.

Powdery mildew is a plant disease caused by a fungus. When weather conditions are favourable, microscopic spores are released and carried by wind. Spores landing on foliage can start a new infection. The cycle takes only a few days and is repeated many times, leading to explosive epidemics. Powdery mildew is favoured by warm and humid weather. It does not require rainfall like other diseases.

Many residents have fruit trees on their property. These trees can be a challenge as insects and diseases are found every year and may damage the plant and the fruit. Adequate care, such as proper pruning and thinning, will help reduce pest numbers and improve fruit quality at harvest.
