Kelowna & Climate Action
The Goal
The City of Kelowna is concerned about climate change and is committed "to reducing community greenhouse gases by 33% below 2007 levels by the year 2020."
The Provincial Community Energy and Emissions Inventory provides an inventory of Kelowna's 2007 greenhouse gas emissions from transportation, buildings and solid waste.
We need to work together to help curb climate change in Kelowna.
Community Climate Action Plan
City staff are currently finalizing a Community Climate Action Plan for Kelowna which will provide policies and initiatives to reach the 33% reduction target. The plan will incorporate feedback from consultation with stakeholders, businesses and the public on the reduction initiatives and the target. Additional information on the Plan will be posted soon.
In order to reach the goal, per capita emissions must be reduce by nearly half (a total of 3.6 tonnes per capita). Here is one way a person could reduce emissions and in the process save money and get healthier!
- Reduce vehicle kilometers travelled by 20% annually 1.1 tonnes
- Improve vehicle fuel efficiency by 2 litres/100 km 0.9 tonnes
- Maintain vehicle and change driving habits 1.0 tonnes
- Reduce idling by 3 minutes per day 0.1 tonnes
- Reduce natural gas consumption by 10% 0.5 tonnes
- Reduce electrical consumption by 10% 0.03 tonnes TOTAL 3.6 tonnes

What We Are Doing
The City of Kelowna has signed on to the Provincial Climate Action Charter, committing to a goal of the corporation becoming carbon neutral by 2012.
