Communities in Bloom
The City of Kelowna is a proud participant in Communities in Bloom , a national program designed to enhance the environment and beautification of Canadian municipalities.
Annual participation is overseen by the Communities in Bloom Committee.
Kelowna first competed in 1996, finishing second in the country. In 1998, we were selected as the winning city in our population category and have since gone on to win a number of national and international awards.
The City annually participates through a number of local programs:
Participating cities choose to become involved in the annual competition that evaluates communities based on a series of environmental, aesthetic and community spirit criteria.
Kelowna was named national finalist in 1998 and 2003 and Canadian Classic national winner in 2006. The Canadian Classic Category pairs a national award-winning community with a first time community entrant in order to mentor them in the program.
Beauty Spot
The Kelowna Beauty Spot program recognizes local businesses, communities and individuals who help make Kelowna beautiful through well thought-out and maintained private gardens. Gardens that have been recognized by the committee are marked with the Beauty Spot sign. Do you know a Kelowna resident, business or group whose garden makes Kelowna bloom? Nominate them for a Beauty Spot award today!
Green Thumb Awards
The Green Thumb Awards recognize individuals, neighbourhoods and businesses that beautify our community through their gardening and stewardship efforts. The Awards also raise awareness of the important role landscaping plays in our community and encourage others to participate. Contact us for more information or to nominate yourself or a friend.
International Competition
Kelowna has also seen success on the world stage:
- In 1999, Kelowna participated in the Worlds In Bloom competition as a member of Team Canada, placing second to England.
- In 2000, partnering with Solihull, England, Kelowna won the International Challenge team competition.
- In 2001, Kelowna placed second in the Nations In Bloom
competition.
