Regional Compost Facility

commonagearialphoto.jpgThe Regional Compost Facility, located at 551 Commonage Road on the outskirts of Vernon, is a joint operation between the City of Vernon  and the City of Kelowna designed to effectively compost biosolid material through an environmentally-friendly and financially-sound process.

Opened in 2006, the facility produces a safe and highly-effective soil conditioner, known as Ogogrow, in accordance with the Waste Management Act’s Organic Matter Recycling Regulations. All Ogogrow sales go directly back to the operation to help ensure the long-term, economic sustainability of the Regional facility.

Facility Upgrades

In fall of 2008, Dayton & Knight Ltd, a Vancouver-based consulting firm, was hired to complete a comprehensive odour study of the Regional facility to address odour concerns of area residents. Based on their findings, it was determined that the facility was operating above its current design capacity.

The City of Kelowna and City of Vernon intend to increase capacity of the site to 36,400 tonnes per year and conduct necessary upgrades to address odours.

Odour Control Measures

In the short-term, the Regional facility is diverting 40 per cent of the amount of biosolids previously processed at the plant to ensure that an optimum level of production capacity is maintained. The facility has completed a number of systems upgrades and production improvements to improve the aeration capabilities of the facility.

With the short-term measures in place, Dayton & Knight Ltd. will complete a second study to determine if the acceptable odour levels have been achieved. This information will be utilized in the design process currently underway to establish system upgrades and maximum capacity levels for an enhanced facility.
