Capital News Centre
Located in Mission Recreation Park, the Capital News Centre is an environmental award-winning facility constructed through a design, build, operate agreement with RG Properties.
The City of Kelowna contracted RG Properties to design and build the recreation facility on City property and RG Properties pays the City for the right to operate it.
Additionally, the City has control of the booking of the facility up to 8 p.m. on weekdays and up to 5 p.m. on weekends, offering the City's rates during these times. All additional time slots are controlled by RG Properties. Through this agreement, the City has access to a state-of-the-art facility for its residents and RG Properties has the opportunity to generate revenue by capitalizing on Kelowna's growing adult recreation and sports tourism market.
The Capital News Centre is located on Gordon Drive at Lexington. It is the cornerstone of Mission Recreation Park. The centre, opened in January 2004, was awarded the Environmental Excellence Award from Aquila Networks Canada for its energy-efficient design. The $16.5 million facility offers:
- two NHL-size ice surfaces
- two indoor playing fields
- fitness centre and indoor running track
- leisure skating area
- physiotherapist’s office
- concession stand and restaurant
